18. Black Milk - Tronic
After the death of J Dilla, it’s great to see anyone continuing that Detroit sound. It’s even better when they do it on the level of Jay Dee, like Black Milk does. The full-on obvious samples of most hip-hop are nowhere to be seen. Instead, soul samples are taken out of context to make something unexpected. Black comes clever, rapping about being torn between pleasing the underground hip-hop fans, and the possibility of mainstream stardom. Clearly, Black’s going to achieve both.
