Benjamin Apple: Tom Hanks doesn't exist in Tom Hanks movies

I think about this a lot. Every movie takes place in a slightly-alternate universe where the only difference is that the movie and its creators don’t exist. I guess wall-breakers like “Tristram Shandy” don’t count, in a weird…

I do this all the time - to the point where I let it detract from what I’m watching.  Like in Seinfeld when George was dating Marissa Tomei.  If Marissa Tomei exists then SNL exists cause she’s hosted before.  But if SNL exists then Julia Louis Dryfus exists cause she was a cast member on that show.  So do Elaine Benes and Julia Louis Dryfus BOTH exist?  I feel like it’s stupid to think this way but I can’t help myself.

Another way to look at it: look at biopics. Walk the Line, for example. Johnny Cash doesn’t look like Johnny Cash. He looks like Joaquin Phoenix. But does Walk the Line take place in our universe? Yes. We just aren’t seeing exactly what that character looks like. Now think of when scripts are written. The screenwriter probably has a character’s appearance in mind, and it likely doesn’t look like the person who plays that character in the finished movie. Basically what I’m saying is that we aren’t actually seeing what that character looks like, but rather just the celebrity portraying them. The characters in the film aren’t seeing the appearance we’re seeing. Except in the case of Julia Roberts in Ocean’s Twelve.

Does this make sense?
