Pow-wow

1) Gathering of Native Americans

2) Form of Christian mysticism mainly practiced by the Pennsylvania Dutch.

Most of their beliefs were derived from the Sixth and Seventh Books of Moses, a German text claimed to contain the spells from which Moses derived his powers. Here’s their cure for headaches:

Tame thou flesh and bone, like Christ in Paradise; and you who will assist thee, this I tell thee (name) for your repentance sake. + + + This you must say three times, each time lasting for three minutes, and your headache will soon cease. But if your headache is caused by strong drink, or otherwise will not leave you soon, then you must repeat these words every minute. This, however, is not necessary in regard to headache.

Not exactly sure why magic derived from Moses’s magic mentions Christ. Also, kind of surprised there’s a holy hangover cure.

Note that this magic business is not associated with the Amish type of Pennsylvania Dutch (AKA plain people) but more the “Fancy Dutch” or “Gay Dutch”.I was going to post the first google image search of a person for either of those terms, but “Fancy Dutch” showed a guy in a Borat swimsuit while “Gay Dutch,” well, you can guess.
