Top 50 singles of 2009 10-1
10. Dan Black - “U + Me”: Not that Dan Black. Starts with something along the lines of Andrew Bird, but then massive ultrapop synths drop on the chorus, demolishing any traces preciousness.
9. Cam’ron - “My Job”: A total surprise from Dipset. Fun “fuck this job” lyrics over a sample from a great northern soul classic, “A Little Misunderstanding.” A no-brainer, really. Someone should have made this sooner.
8. Major Lazer feat. Nina Sky & Ricky Blaze - “Keep It Goin’ Louder”: Simple, synth-heavy dance pop from the strangest act of the year, a fictional Jamaican zombie fighter. Diplo and Switch know what they are doing.
7. Jay-Z feat. Alicia Keys - “Empire State of Mind”: Duh.
6. Yeasayer - “Ambling Alp”: I hated Yeasayer’s first album, but this destroys. Animal Collective meets a heavy dose of pop.
5. La Roux - “Bulletproof”: Sonic the Hedgehog synths. Distorted dance beat. Killer chorus. Redhead with a weird haircut.
4. BBU - “CHI Dont Dance”: So much synth in my top 10. Politically radical party rap.
3. Frankmusik - “Better Off As Two”: Highly polished glitch-pop. The only song on his debut that actually got better with the big budget studio treatment.
2. Basement Jaxx - “Raindrops”: Massive comeback from the Jaxx after the mediocre Crazy Itch Radio. Possibly their best song ever. Dance central.
1. VV Brown - “Shark in the Water”: Until the chorus, seems like better than average sunny-day acoutipop. But then the WORLD’S GREATEST CHORUS DROPS LIKE THE ATOM BOMB.
