19. The Strokes - Is This It
Forgot about these guys, didn’t you? I know I did, at least until I started making this list. The band that launched a thousand NME favorites seemed to come out of nowhere and suddenly was all over modern rock radio, flanked by Limp Bizkit and Creed. Suddenly every teenager was listening to a garage rock band fronted by Lou Reed Jr. And it was good. Simple, driving rock songs with great hooks. They followed up with too-similar records, but hell, it’s a good sound, so they certainly could do worse. Other Highlights: “Last Nite,” “New York City Cops,” “Someday”
