Starlight Crypt
This is a film by documentarian Lance Bangs of the Jeff Mangum set that would become the live album, Live at Jittery Joe’s. Is a spartan, one-camera affair, but still great for anyone who’s as obsessed about Neutral Milk Hotel as I. I embedded the heart-breaking “Holland, 1945” B-side, “Engine,” but I recommend watching the entire set on...
Queen Considering 'Idol's' Lambert As Frontman →
A lot of music snobs (such as myself) might get all up in arms about this, but I don’t think it’s a half-bad idea. I didn’t watch this season (or really any season) of American Idol, but I did see the last episode. Mostly sucked, but I was shocked at how spot-on-Freddie Adam was during “We Are the Champions,” to the point where I noted he could really work as a new...
Basically a new ABBA song →
Popjustice has a clip from a new Benny and Bjorn collaboration. It sounds as if ABBA just reunited. I just peed.
Wow, this is a really cool idea. Brings a whole new collaborative layer to the web. They’re still creating it, so I could see a lot of neat new things popping up in it. If it takes off, this could be a game changer.
Lessons learned from my most recent trip to Second...
I’ve always noticed how polished and smooth Second City is compared to other sketch.
No need for involved costumes and props. If your mime is good, you’re all set.
Related to that, it’s much more smooth and enjoyable for the audience if the transitions between scenes are, like, 5 seconds.
Two to three line, quick joke scenes are good pallate cleansers, but you can only do...
Jay Bennett, dead at age 45 →
Shit. Jay Bennett, formerly of Wilco, is one of the great unsung geniuses of modern music. Just as responsible (if not more) as Tweedy or O’Rourke for the masterpiece that is Yankee Hotel Foxtrot. Sadly, despite their high quality, his post-Wilco albums were largely ignored. Hopefully they are now rediscovered. A real loss for music.
Here’s Jay in the awesome doc on the making of...

Why Republicans are sore losers →
I thought it was going to be some stupid article about how Republicans are assholes, but there’s actually some pretty good insight near the end about why Republicans always win the trophy for Most Obstructionist.
Democrats view elections as a means to an end, while Republicans view an election as an end in itself. This arises from their differing views about government. Democrats want to use...
The Most Depressing Places in America →
How can you possibly have a list of the most depressing cities without former murder capital of the world (isn’t anymore because there’s no more people to murder) and city adjacent to my hometown, Gary, Indiana?

What should JJ Abrams remake next?
Clearly.
LOL, why would the O’Reilly factor even air this? They lose.

The Mae Shi - “The Lamb and the Lion”
This is one of those truly amazing TED talks that come around once a year that you think about a subject in a completely different way.
Barber talks about truly sustainable foie gras. Sounds delicious. And world-changing.
I need to just throw up the money and go to Blue Hill. Anyone interested in dropping several hundred on a meal?
Burger of the Month Club →
adamfrucci:
I appreciate what these guys are doing, but they’re clearly only interested in fat, pub-style burgers. I can’t abide by their shit-talking of Shake Shack or their placement of Burger Joint so high up. You can’t say Shake Shack is overrated and then put Burger Joint at #6. And Spotted Pig is at #43? These guys are nuts.
Clue they are full of it: cheddar.
Michael Steele in January in regards to the “Magic Negro” song about Obama:
TP: A big theme on the panel today was how to get the GOP to embrace minority voters. Do you think that Mr. Saltsman’s CD that he released to the RNC members helps or hurts that effort?
STEELE: Oh it doesn’t help at all. Absolutely, it reinforces a negative stereotype of the party. […] And so now we...
